Microphone Setup

br\u016bhi provides three microphone input slots: Mic 1, Mic 2, and Remote (line-in or RTP). Each slot is independent with its own gain, mute, and DSP chain.

Microphone Slots

On startup, br\u016bhi auto-detects the best device configuration based on what is connected to your system.

Per-Slot Controls

80 Hz High-Pass Filter	On/Off	Removes low-frequency rumble and handling noise. Enabled by default.

Tip

Enable the 80 Hz high-pass filter on all mic slots. Desk thumps, air conditioning, and chair movement produce energy below 80 Hz that adds nothing to the broadcast and increases masking of the voice signal.

Monitor Gate (MON)

Each mic slot has a MON gate that prevents the mic signal from reaching the monitor output (speakers in the studio). This avoids feedback when your studio monitors are open.

• Enable the MON gate per-slot to block that mic from the monitor mix.
• The master also has a MON gate toggle that cuts all mics from the monitor at once.

☁️ Cloud

The monitor gate concept applies in the Cloud dashboard’s PFL/monitor controls. Since you are monitoring through headphones in a browser, feedback is less of a concern, but the gate is still useful to prevent echo when using desktop speakers.

Device Selection

Each mic slot has its own device selector. You can use three different physical audio interfaces simultaneously — one per slot. Devices are selectable from any WASAPI (Windows), CoreAudio (macOS), or ALSA/JACK (Linux) input visible to the OS.

☁️ Cloud

In the Cloud dashboard, microphone input comes from the browser’s WebRTC audio capture. The browser presents available input devices via navigator.mediaDevices.enumerateDevices(). You can switch between physical microphones from the dashboard’s mic slot selector.

Up to 4 simultaneous microphone inputs are supported via a GStreamer audiomixer. Each input arrives as a separate WebRTC track.

Per-Mic DSP Chain

🖥️ Desktop

Each microphone slot has its own full 7-effect DSP chain, identical in structure to the master DSP chain. This lets you apply EQ, compression, noise gate, and enhancement per-speaker independently.

Three built-in presets are available:

Broadcast Voice	80 Hz HPF, gentle high-shelf boost (+2 dB at 5 kHz), fast compressor (4:1, −18 dB threshold), noise gate
Music DJ	80 Hz HPF, light compression (2:1), slight low-mid cut
Podcast	80 Hz HPF, heavier compression (6:1) for levelling, moderate de-ess via high-shelf cut

Select a preset as a starting point, then adjust individual parameters in the DSP chain editor.

☁️ Cloud

The Cloud dashboard provides browser-side EQ and compression controls per microphone (using the Web Audio API). Server-side DSP via Liquidsoap is limited to normalize(). The full 7-effect per-mic chain is a Desktop-only capability.

Voice Gate

The noise gate in the per-mic DSP chain silences the microphone when nobody is speaking. This eliminates background noise between sentences.

Recommended gate settings for a home studio:

Caution

Set the gate threshold carefully. Too aggressive a threshold cuts the beginning of words. Monitor the gate open/close indicator while speaking at your normal level to find the right threshold.
